Why winter is the season nobody books

Winter is the quietest month in my calendar and the one I would pick if I were booking my own session. Everyone competes for the same three October weekends, then treats the next five months as unusable.

The light is the argument. Low sun, thin air, and a sky that stays soft from about two in the afternoon onward. In June you fight for one good hour. In January the whole back half of the day is workable.

It is not as cold as the calendar suggests

The number on the forecast is not the number that matters. Wind and moisture are. Twenty degrees on a still morning in the woods is genuinely pleasant. Thirty-five on an exposed ridge with wind off the water is not.

I plan winter sessions around shelter — treelines, lee sides of hills, the porch of a rented cabin — so there is always somewhere to step out of the wind between frames.

Build the session around somewhere warm

The best winter sessions I have shot alternate between outside and inside. Twenty minutes in the snow, then back into a cabin or a car with the heat running, then back out.

This is not a compromise. The indoor frames are usually the ones people print. Windows do something in winter they do not do in summer, and a room lit by one lamp at four in the afternoon is a gift.

What to wear when it is actually cold

Wool over everything. Long coats photograph better than puffers because they hold a shape and move when you walk. Cream, camel, deep green, charcoal, and rust all sit well against snow and bare trees.

Bring the warm layer you actually want to wear. A coat you are comfortable in beats a thinner one you are braced against for an hour, and it shows in your face either way.

Snow is optional

People assume a winter session needs fresh snow. Some of my favourite winter work has none. Bare branches, brown fields, and grey water give you a restrained frame that makes the two of you the only warm thing in it.

If snow does arrive, the day after a storm is the one to chase — clear sky, clean ground, and everything still holding its edge.

Golden hour arrives during your workday

In late December the good light around Saratoga runs from roughly two-thirty to four-fifteen. That is the whole thing.

It means an early finish and a normal evening afterward, which most couples prefer once they realise it. It also means we start on time. There is no second window in winter.

A shorter session is usually the right one

Ninety minutes is my default in winter, against two hours the rest of the year. Cold shortens everyone's patience, including mine, and the last twenty minutes of a long winter session are rarely the good ones.

Shorter also means we move faster, which suits the season. Less standing, more walking.

Booking, and what happens if the weather turns

Winter dates open in the autumn and stay available far longer than summer ones, so there is usually room even a few weeks out.

If the forecast turns genuinely bad — ice, whiteout, anything unsafe on the roads — we move the date. There is no fee for that. Weather is not something either of us controls, and I would rather reschedule than spend the session managing it.
