Chasing peak color in the Adirondacks

Is an autumn session up north worth the drive?

Almost always, though not for the reason people expect. The colour is the obvious draw. The real difference is that an hour north of Saratoga the landscape stops being a backdrop and starts being a place, and the scale of it changes how people stand next to each other.

The window is narrower than you think

Peak colour moves south roughly a week at a time. The high peaks around Keene and Lake Placid turn in the last week of September. Saratoga and the southern Adirondacks follow through the first half of October. The Hudson Valley holds on until the third week.

That gives any one location about ten good days, and weather can take three of them. Book the date, then keep the two days either side loose if you can. I would rather move a session by forty-eight hours than photograph a brown hillside.

Where to go near Saratoga

Moreau Lake is the easiest start: water, colour, and a short walk from the car, which matters more than people think if anyone is in shoes they care about. The Lake George overlooks on the eastern side are worth the climb for the long view down the water.

If you want ridges stacking into blue distance rather than reflection, head toward the Catskills instead. I avoid the roadside pull-offs along the Northway in the first week of October. So does everyone else, which is exactly the problem.

Choosing your backdrop

Water doubles the colour, and it is the single easiest way to make an autumn frame look expensive. Still lake, no wind, early morning. That is most of the trick.

Height does the opposite job. Above the tree line you trade reflection for depth, and the colour reads as bands going grey-blue toward the horizon. Both work. Pick one per session rather than trying to get both inside an hour.

What should we wear?

Autumn is already doing the colour work, so the job is to stay out of its way. Cream, oatmeal, deep green and navy all sit against orange without competing with it.

Rust and burgundy disappear into the trees. Every October someone arrives in a burnt-orange dress, and every October we spend the session hunting for a grey rock to stand on.

Dress for the temperature, not the photos

It will be colder than the forecast says, especially near water and especially once the sun drops. Forty degrees on an exposed ridge feels like thirty.

Bring a coat you are happy to be photographed in and wear it between frames. Nothing reads worse than someone gritting their teeth through a portrait, and nobody has ever regretted the extra layer.

When is the best time of day?

The two hours before sunset, running into the half hour after it. In mid-October that means starting around four and finishing by six-thirty, which is early enough that you can still go to dinner afterwards.

Morning works if you want mist coming off the water, but you are committing to a five a.m. alarm and a real chance the fog never shows.

Stay out past the sunset

Most people start walking back the moment the sun is gone. The twenty minutes after are the part worth staying for. The glare disappears, the air sharpens, and the colour on the water goes quiet and deep.

Two people holding onto each other in that light stops looking like a portrait and starts looking like a frame from a film. It costs you almost nothing to wait, and it is reliably where the best photograph of the evening comes from.
